ESO at JHS Rule Clarifications
Revisions as of February 16, 2008.

GENERAL RULES
No outside materials (notes, calculators, etc) are permitted in any event unless specifically stated in the event rules. Participants may not bring cell phones into any event room.

EVENT-BY-EVENT
A is for Anatomy - New Clarifications Added February 16th
Teams will have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the test. Ties will be broken with pre-determined tie-breaker questions. Time will not be a scoring factor.

Aerodynamics
Teams will be supplied with two sheets of foldable material (not necessarily plain paper). The material may be of irregular shapes, although all teams will receive identical sheets. Teams will have 15 minutes to construct two planes. Each plane will be launched once. One team member will launch the first plane. Then, the second team member must launch the other plane.

Barge Building
Barges will be built from heavy duty aluminum foil.

Boggle Science
Rules online. No clarifications or revisions. Note rules online differ from those printed in the manual.

Bridging the Gap
Rules online. No clarifications or revisions.

Calculator Contest
Only one student will compete per team in this event (not 2 as described in the manual). Students will have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the problems. Time will be used as the tie-breaker.

Categories
Teams will have 8 minutes to complete each round.

Chopper Challenge
Teams will construct two of the three choppers as described in the event instructions. The two types of chopper to be constructed will be revealed at the start of the event. Teams will receive 20 minutes to construct their choppers.

Cutting Edge
Rules online. No clarifications or revisions.

Deep Blue Sea

Teams will have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the test. Ties will be broken with pre-determined tie-breaker questions. Time will not be a scoring factor.

Don't Bug Me

Each team may bring a single 8 1/2 by 11 inch page of handwritten notes (key) to aid them in answering questions. Notes must be handwritten by the student participant. The note page will be collected and kept by the judges at the end of the event. Teams will have 45 minutes to complete the event. Time is not a scoring factor.

Egg Drop - New Clarifications Added January 27th
Devices must incorporate a parachute design. The parachute will not be considered when the package size is measured (only that portion protecting the egg will be measured). Devices must remain in the air for at least 3 seconds to be scored. Devices will be dropped from the second floor balcony overlooking the gymnasium floor. No plumb line may be used. The drop is approximately 15 feet. Each team will be supplied one grade A, large egg by ESO at JHS staff. All devices must be impounded by 9:30 am.

Estimania
Ties will be broken with pre-determined tie-breaker questions. Time will not be a scoring factor.

Grab a Gram
Students will mass samples at up to six stations.

How Do You Spell Science?
All teams will be given the same 20 words to spell and define in the form of a spelling test during the morning competition. The top 6 scorers from the test will advance to the finals. The finals will consist of a spelling bee competition. Teams will be required to define the word they are asked to spell beginning with the fourth round.

Metric Mania
Rules online. No clarifications or revisions.

Mystery Architecture
Teams are advised to provide their own baseball which can be used during construction and for measurement, however it is not required. The event supervisor will have a baseball which will be available for teams to use during measurement only. A maximum of 2 students may participate for a team in this event.

Pentathlon - New Clarifications Added January 27th
The event will take place indoors, appropriate running/tennis shoes are required. All four team members will complete the final (fifth) physical challenge together. Teams must be comprised of 2 boys and 2 girls. There is no penalty for incorrectly answered questions. Once a question has been answered incorrectly, a new question will be given. No fragile objects will be used. Participants will tag each other to transfer between obstacles.

Picture This - New Clarifications Added January 27th
All three team members MUST alternate as sketchers. 24 total words will be used. The time of the round will be 4 minutes. Words not played (including the final word in progress when time is called) will not be scored.

Reflection Relay
The preparation time has been reduced to 30 seconds for part I only. Therefore, teams which can align their mirrors to bounce the light beam off the target in part I in less than 30 seconds will receive a score of zero (0). Penalty time will begin at 31 seconds. For example, a team that takes 45 seconds to complete part one will receive a score of 15 (45 seconds - 30 seconds of allowed preparation time = 15 points). Teams must use the mirrors provided by Jacksonville High School for both parts. JHS will provide pocket mirrors for part I and standing mirrors for part II.

Science Detectives
Rules now printed in the ESO Coaches Manual (5th edition) and available online. Teams will have 20 minutes to complete each part (parts may be completed in reverse order by some teams). Following the two 20-minute sessions, teams will be given an additional 5 minutes to review their answers before all answer sheets must be turned in.

Solid, Liquid, or Gas - New Clarifications Added January 27th
Up to 2 participants per team will be permitted (participate together as a team). Teams will be presented questions in test form rather than at stations. Teams will have a maximum of 50 minutes to complete the test. Time is not a scoring factor. Ties will be broken with predetermined tie-breaker questions.

Starry, Starry Night
Teams will have a maximum of 50 minutes to complete the test. Time is not a scoring factor. Ties will be broken with predetermined tie-breaker questions. Teams will not be required to bring pen lights.

Weather or Not

Write It, Do It
Teams may have up to four members. Any combination of members may be used for the writers and doers (1-3, 2-2, 3-1).
